Swimming sites - Zuid-Holland

Swimming in open water is never entirely without risk. Open water can’t be compared to water in a swimming pool, which is constantly being purified. The quality of open water, like lakes and ponds, can change very quickly during the summer. For this reason, it’s a good idea to always check the current conditions before you go swimming.

The official swimming season for open water runs from the 1st of May until October. In this period more than one hundred swimming sites in Zuid-Holland are being tested for their water quality every two weeks. The provincial authorities only monitor the official swimming locations indicated on the map.

The water is tested for bacteria, clarity and the presence of algae. Sometimes the water quality is too poor to allow swimming. Also the location can be unsafe. In these cases the provincial authorities of Zuid-Holland take measures. Up-to-date alerts are always announced on this website and at the location with signs and statements in a display case.
